Sanam Saeed’s love for theatre is no news and the artist performed in multiple theatre plays before she appeared on TV and in films. Recently she made a comeback to theatre with Zain Ahmed’s Urdu musical, Heer Ranjha and now she is gearing up for Nida Butt’s The 39 Steps. Scheduled to premiere tonight at the Karachi Arts Council, the upcoming theatre production is an adaptation of the popular Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name.
The 39 Steps features Faraz Lodhi, Zeeshan Shah and Ali Hashmi aside from Saeed and these four actors will be portraying over 50 characters on stage. Produced by Made for Stage Productions, the upcoming play is set in 1930s England and is a spy thriller/comedy with lightning-fast costume and character changes.
According to reports, Saeed plays the roles of a German spy Annabella, British blonde Pamela and country belle Margaret while Faraz Lodhi will be seen as Richard Hannay, British traveler on the run to prove his innocence; Zeeshan Shah and Ali Hashmi play over a dozen characters each. The play follows an adventure story and is very minimal with no sets, no singing, dancing or orchestra, unlike most of Nida Butt’s past productions such as Grease – The musical.
The 39 Steps is an Olivier Award-winning play that has been staged on Broadway and was the 5th longest-running play in London’s West End. Nida Butt’s spoof of the play will premiere today, November 25, and it will run till December 1, 2017. Grab your tickets now.
