Bilal Lashari’s reboot of Maula Jatt, filming these days, landed into a bit of controversy earlier this month as Sarwar Bhatti, producer of the original Maula Jatt (1979) claimed that the producers don’t own the rights to use the name, characters and music of the original film. As a consequence, a legal notice was apparently served to director Bilal Lashari, producer Ammara Hikmat as well as the cast including Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi and Humaima Malick. However as per recent development, the court has cleared them of all the charges, discarding the claims made by Bhatti and allowing the film’s smooth production.
According to a notice issued over the weekend, the Intellectual Property Tribunal, to whom Bhatti filed an application seeking stay over the film’s release, has categorically rejected his claims. As per the notice, the law dictates that anything (rather film) which is not a reproduction of the material contained in 1979 Maula Jatt CDs, will not amount to copyright infringement in any manner as submitted by the Intellectual Property Counsel, Khurram Chughtai on behalf of Encyclomedia – Lashari.
Earlier this month, producer Ammara Hikmat also spoke on the subject stating that Bhatti’s claims are false and that they will take legal action against it.
The upcoming reboot is currently being shot around Lahore while the title and release date hasn’t been announced as yet.
