The Feroze Khan and Sana Javed starrer, which premiered on Geo TV this week, highlights multiple pertinent social issues.

Anjum Shahzad’s much awaited drama serial, Khaani, featuring Feroze Khan and Sana Javed in lead roles, went on air earlier this week. Khan essays the role of Hadi, the only son of a politician (played by Mehmood Aslam), while Javed stars as the titular character, Khaani.

The episode opens with Khaani’s middle-class, small and happy family that comprises her parents and three siblings including a twin brother, Sarym, and two younger sisters. Both her parents are educated and work to provide a good life to their children who are obedient and well mannered. They are content with their lives and have raised their children well despite all odds. This is in sharp contrast with how Hadi’s world operates. Coming from a family of politicians, he has been raised in a way where no one questions him on his wrongdoings.

Coming back to Khaani, she is the eldest of the three daughters and is very close to her brother, Sarym. When he shares with Khaani that he has applied for a scholarship, she is afraid of the distance that will come between them if he leaves. However, fate had planned something else for them and her brother loses his life in the hands of a ruthless, spoiled brat, Mir Hadi.

After finding out that he has received the scholarship he had applied for, Sarym is heading home when he finds a jeep parked behind his car. He politely requests Mir Hadi to move his car but the banter between two men turns violent and ends in tragedy for the young Sarym.

Khaani as the innocent, not so brave young girl and Hadi as the merciless son of a political leader impress in the first episode. The two come from an entirely different family background and have been raised in completely different settings.

Khaani sheds light on these differences and how their upbringing affects their code of conduct later in life. The play takes up the theme of power and how the more powerful ones in our society influence the lives of those who are less privileged. Not only they are set free despite committing crimes but also expect the world to operate according to their wish.

Hadi’s father doesn’t question him on anything and his mother, essayed by Saman Ansari, is only concerned about how it would affect their reputation in the society. She only cares about elections and that nothing should go against them.

What will be their reaction when they learn that Hadi killed someone and what ways they will use to brush the issue aside, we will find out in the next episode. But for now, we are eager to see how Khaani, who is afraid to raise her voice against evil, will come in contact with Hadi and if she stands up for his brother or not.
