This just proves that you can’t take anything – not even a solid diamond tiara – for granted these days. 18-year old Itir Esen, who won Miss Turkey 2017 this week, was stripped of her title just 24 hours after winning, over a Tweet she had posted in July. The Tweet was brought to the organizers’ attention after the contest had concluded, which is quite unfortunate for the young teenager as well as the credibility of the event.
She had made light of last year’s attempted coup by posting: “I got my period on the morning of the July 15 martyrs’ day. I’m marking the day by bleeding as a representation of the martyrs’ blood.”
Ms Esen denied that she was the author of the report but a 24-hour investigation proved that he had written in; the Tweet of course has been deleted since.
As a result of this scandal, the first runner up has been awarded title of Miss Turkey, and will be representing the country in the Miss World pageant.
Can Sandikcioglu, who heads the Miss Turkey Organisation, said the Tweet was “unacceptable.” “We are sad to announce that we have reached the conclusion that the tweet was posted by Itir Esen,” he said. “It is not possible for the Miss Turkey Organisation, whose aim is to promote Turkey worldwide and to contribute to its image, to accept such a posting.”
Moral of the story: Cyberspace is not an alternate universe. Post carefully for it can come back to haunt you!
