There’s no denying the fact that social media has become a powerful tool in our current climate and plays a key role in shaping lives and careers. For artists, its value is significant since it can help them reach a sizable internet populace while bypassing traditional media structures.

There’s no denying the fact that social media has become a powerful tool in our current climate and plays a key role in shaping lives and careers. For artists, its value is significant since it can help them reach a sizable internet populace while bypassing traditional media structures.

A glimpse of this power can be gauged from Lux’s latest TVC that includes Mahira Khan, Mawra Hocane and Maya Ali. All three were selected for this particular campaign because of their strong social media presence and popularity among the masses.

We spoke to Mahira Khan on the sidelines of the event to find out her take on this subject. “There are a lot of things happening around me but I’m very lazy to put them up on social media,” Mahira told Instep. “Even with Lux, people have been telling me to post at least something. I am told that it is important for me because of the field I belong to and it does work for actors. But I would like to tell you something: we’re actors. Our work will last. Of course social media is the need of the hour. All of us are on social media but at the end of the day it’s our work that speaks for us. It will be remembered even when we are no longer there.”

We agree that social media works for a lot of actors in this day and age but if it isn’t backed by credible work, the success or the illusion of it, eventually disappears.
