We are living in a time where Charlize Theron spearheaded an entire action film on her shoulders, (Mad Max) and Gal Gadot delivered a box office success playing the first female superhero to have her own film in and as Wonder Woman.
So when you see the role of women being diminished in films that revolve entirely around male bravado, it becomes a little frustrating, especially for the female actors who have to put up with it. Michelle Rodriquez is clearly in the mood to shift to more empowered roles after her 15 year long association with the Fast and Furious franchise.
“F8 is out digitally today,” she wrote in the caption of her Instagram photo. “I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise. It’s been a good ride & I’m grateful for the opportunity the fans & studio have provided over the years ... One Love.”
This isn’t the first time the star has voiced her concern over the kind of roles women still get. “On day one, I [changed] the character from being something that I could not do in front of millions of people into a character that I’m actually proud of, but at the end of the day, what message are we sending out there for women?” she said to Entertainment Weekly. “It does weigh heavy on my head — especially in the male-dominated environment that I work in.”
