Other nominees include Wonder Woman, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Logan.
The Golden Globes, the Emmys, the Academy Awards and the BAFTAs are considered prestigious ceremonies that are all about critical acclaim. But, if you want to know what millions of young fans are watching and rooting for, look no further than the annual Teen Choice Awards.
With the first wave of nominations for the year 2017 having been unveiled this week, it is clear that critical darlings have no place in this shortlist. It may not be as esteemed a ceremony but as Screen Rant rightly noted, the nominations celebrate “a lot of blockbuster crowd pleasers from major franchises along with highly rated shows”.
A celebration of mainstream pop culture only, a ceremony like this allows fans to pick the winners and they can vote up to 10 times for each of the awards until the deadline is over. This year’s nomination list is therefore full of superheroes, sequels and popular TV content. Some nominees such as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, The Space Between Us, The Shack, Baywatch, Keeping Up With the Joneses, Sandy Wexler and Table 19 have made the cut despite getting slammed by critics.
It must also be added that the categories include genres like action, fantasy sci-fi and other themes instead of pure acting nods. So, in the category of Choice Action Movie, films like Logan, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, The Fate of the Furious, Transformers: The Last Knight, Wonder Woman and xXx: Return of Xander Cage have made the cut while Choice Sci-Fi Movie nominees include movies like Arrival, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Kong: Skull Island, Power Rangers, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and The Space Between Us.
Similarly in Choice Action Movie Actor, Brenton Thwaites and Johnny Depp from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales have been nominated while Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel from The Fate of the Furious are also nominated side by side. Other nominees include Chris Pine from Wonder Woman and Hugh Jackman from Logan.
In Choice Action Movie Actress, India’s Deepika Padukone is nominated for her part in xXx: Return of Xander Cage and is joined by the likes of Gal Gadot for Wonder Woman, Kaya Scodelario for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Michelle Rodriguez for The Fate of the Furious, Nina Dobrev for xXx: Return of Xander Cage and Ruby Rose – xXx: Return of Xander Cage.
Other nominees include Chris Pratt from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Diego Luna from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Jeremy Renner from Arrival, Tom Hiddleston from Kong: Skull Island, Amy Adams for Arrival, Brie Larson for Kong: Skull Island, Felicity Jones for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Zoe Saldana for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Benedict Cumberbatch for Doctor Strange, Dan Stevens for Beauty and the Beast, Dwayne Johnson for Moana and Eddie Redmayne for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
In television, TV shows like Empire, Famous In Love, Pretty Little Liars, Riverdale, Star, This Is Us, Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments, Stranger Things, Supernatural, Teen Wolf, The Vampire Diaries, Timeless, Arrow, Gotham, Lethal Weapon, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Supergirl, The Flash, Baby Daddy, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Fuller House, Jane the Virgin, One Day at a Time and Young & Hungry have been nominated.
Actors, who have starred in some of these productions, have picked up acting nods as well. So, Cole Sprouse from Riverdale, Ian Harding from Pretty Little Liars, Jesse Williams from Grey’s Anatomy, Jussie Smollett from Empire, Milo Ventimiglia and Sterling K. Brown from This Is Us have been nominated in the category of Choice Drama TV Actor.
Choice Drama TV Actress includes Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale, Sasha Pieterse, Shay Mitchell and Troian Bellisario – all from Pretty Little Liars as well as Bella Thorne from Famous In Love.
Teen Choice Awards will make its formal appearance this August, watch out.
