Amir Mohiuddin’s directorial debut, Rangreza, is one of the most anticipated films of the year. The film has been in the making for quite some time and features Gohar Rasheed, Urwa Hocane and Bilal Ashraf as principal cast. The first look of the film, out in the form of a 43-second-long teaser, is finally here and is meant to serve as an introduction to these three characters.
With Abida Parveen’s vocals in the background, the Rangreza teaser opens in sublime fashion. We catch Gohar Rasheed essaying the role of a dholak player (in a qawwali outfit). The complex character is a completely change of pace for the popular actor.
On the other hand, Ashraf’s character doesn’t seem to offer anything new as he seems to be supporting that same chocolate hero persona that we witnessed in Janaan. Hocane’s character has a traditional feel to it as she belongs to a qawwali gharana within the context of the film.
While the teaser is brief and we will have to wait for the trailer to offer a verdict, the film does look promising, partly because of the unique characters and partly because of the music since Rangreza is a musical film. “It talks about the imbalance in our society; the rich are becoming richer and poor people are getting poorer. But it does that in a very humorous way, nothing preachy,” Rasheed shared in an interview with Instep. “There’s also a love triangle between Urwa (Hocane), me and Bilal Ashraf.”
Written by Akhtar Qayyum and produced by Yasir Mohiuddin and Usman Malkani, Rangreza will release on December 21, this year.
