Natasha Baig was a strong contender for the Lux Style Award in the category of Best Emerging Talent in Music this year. Even though she lost the award to Hamza Akram Qawwal, in our eyes she has cemented a strong position in Pakistan’s burgeoning music industry. She’s young, fresh and displays a vocal range that allows her to hit the high notes while sounding just as melodious when she’s singing low key.

Her latest single, ‘Maa’ showcases this vocal range brilliantly. Originally written and composed by Sohail Haider, ‘Maa’ has been produced by Baig’s brother, Sameer Baig and as the name suggests, it’s a tribute to mothers all over the world. “We recorded this song back in 2011 for some students of SZABIST. I felt that the song needed a new sound so we reworked it,” Baig spoke to Instep.

“I had this song for a long time and I decided to redo it for this Mother’s Day because the composition is beautiful and heart touching,” she continued. “Also, I had time on my hands to work on a single so it was the perfect time to release the song.”

When asked how her mother reacted to such a sweet gesture, Baig replied: “My mother is a very emotional person but she tries to keep all her emotions within herself. When she saw the song, she was trying hard to appear normal but I could tell she’s really proud of me.”

The video has been shot in a very simple manner as Baig explains that she wanted to keep it performance based so that everyone focuses on the audio and not the visuals.
