Blockbuster Summer

Summer is great, particularly if you’re in school and get three months off during the sweltering heat to laze indoors and enjoy.

The global film and entertainment industry will step in as savior when the heat holds you down.

Summer is great, particularly if you’re in school and get three months off during the sweltering heat to laze indoors and enjoy. But summer, as everyone knows, tends to get tedious because the weather also makes it impossible to engage in any kind of activity for too long. So whether you’re enjoying vacations or slaving away (like we will be), chances are you’ll be holed up in a room wondering what to do to combat boredom. Enter your saviors: the global film and entertainment industry. From epic fantasies and superhero movies to sequels and prequels, we guarantee you’ll be spoilt for choice. Here’s what we’re looking forward to the most:

Game of Thrones

The release date is finally out: Season 7 will premiere on Sunday night, July 16 on HBO in the US… which basically means everyone in Pakistan will be watching pirated versions of the first episode at home on Monday night. The season usually premiers earlier in the year, around March/April but since ‘winter is here’, the cast and crew had to push shooting till later in the year when there was ample snow to blanket the sets in white. We’ve avoided spoilers and trailers so far so that the show blows us away when it’s finally released so we’re doing you the same favour. Who’s excited?

Jhol

Set to release around Eid, Jhol’s first look was recently released and anticipation is high. Starring Urwa Hocane and Ali Azmat, the movie is centered on musicians and has generated quite a buzz within the industry. After Ali Azmat’s film debut in Waar (which garnered a lot of acclaim for his political cameo) this is his first full-fledged movie appearance with leading lady Urwa Hocane. The movie is being described as a comedy of ‘terrors’ and is already being met with high expectations from the audience. Slated to be released around Eid, the movie will join a series of other local releases but is standing out already because of its cast and plot.

Hindi Medium

Despite tense relations with India and a supposed ban on cross-border collaborations, come May 12 and cine-goers in the sub-continent will be treated to Saba Qamar and Irrfan Khan together in Saket Chaudhry’s feature film. Qamar has already established her place in Pakistan as a top notch performer while Khan’s acting chops have been acknowledged not only in India but also internationally. Hindi Medium revolves around the lives of a middle-class couple settled in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. Qamar plays Khan‘s imposing and chirpy wife. With two incredible actors headlining the project, we have high hopes for Qamar’s Bollywood debut.

Mom

Another huge project (simply by virtue of the names involved) Mom is a Boney Kapoor production, featuring his wife, Sridevi and more excitingly for us, Adnan Siddique and Sajal Aly. The film also stars Akshay Khanna and Nawazuddin Siddique. Releasing on 14th July, the project has everyone intrigued and the story is said to be women-centric, which, honestly, we’re glad to hear because aren’t there enough stories about heroic men already?

Guardians of the Galaxy 2

Who didn’t fall in love with the original film? From Groot and his one liners (reminiscent of Hulk and his singular phrase) to Chris Pratt’s quips and bad-assery, our favourite characters reprise their roles in the sequel of the original blockbuster. The film is written and directed by James Gunn and stars an ensemble cast featuring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the Guardians travel throughout the cosmos as they help Peter Quill learn more about his true parentage.

Spiderman: Homecoming

Yep, there’s another new Spiderman reboot coming out this year. The Marvel universe is bringing together all their super-heroes and linking their stories together to create a cohesive narrative, which is why there’s a new Spiderman and it’s going to feature an appearance by Robert Downing Jr. reprising his role as Iron Man. If you’re a super-hero or comic buff, this one is for you.
