For some time now, we’ve been reading press releases, looking at BTS images and wondering whether Hadiqa Kiani’s upcoming and ambitious Wajd project will surpass our enormous expectations. But if the new teaser of Wajd is anything to go by (and it is), we are pretty sure that all those built-up expectations will be met with grace and an ingenuity that is sorely lacking in mainstream.
Philosophical by design, the teaser features a telling narration by Hadiqa in which she speaks about internal truths, breaking down shackles laid down by society and letting the self free. Soon enough, the backdrop shifts and a song from her new album is played as Hadiqa, joined by an impressive ensemble of musicians, reminds us why she should never be underestimated as an artist.
Having given several albums and scores of memorable songs, her contribution to music is not to be diminished and the upcoming Wajd, which is being released by the good folks at Patari, could be her finest effort in years.
Wajd, which literally means “spiritual ecstasy induced by remembrance of God (Zikr) through spiritual poetry” will be miles away from generic pop that is become the unfortunate face of mainstream music. Instead, the incomparable singer-songwriter will be singing in a variety of dialects while the album will contain eight tracks. Produced by Irfan Kiani, the record will explore the subcontinent’s lost traditions, folk heritage, regional and classical instruments and much more.
Apart from the organic music creations, expect arresting visuals to accompany the album, courtesy of one Abdullah Harris who has conceptualized, visualised and directed the chapters. Watch out.
