Television’s biggest hit this year, drama serial Udaari - that touched upon the sensitive issue of child abuse - paved way for more plays to explore social issues such as Khuda Mera Bhi Hai and Mera Kya Qasoor Tha. And now another TV play is hoping to simultaneously educate and entertain viewers in the coming year.

The play in question is Saife Hassan’s upcoming project Sammi in which Mawra Hocane will essay the titular character, Sammi, while TV veteran Adnan Siddiqui will be seen playing the antagonist, Rashid.

“I am playing the character of Rashid who is the right hand man of his elder brother (played by Rehan Sheikh),” Siddiqui told Instep. “He is the hit-man and does all the dirty work for Chaudhry (elder brother) without questioning.”

Produced in collaboration with John Hopkins University, Sammi is all set to air on January 29, next year and tackles the issue of violence against women who give birth to daughters. Rashid’s wife Salima (played by Saman Ansari) gives birth to five daughters in an attempt to fulfill her husband’s desire to have a son.

Coming back to Siddiqui’s villainous character in the play, Siddiqui shared, “As an actor it’s a good add-on in my portfolio and I just want to do justice with it. Rest depends on viewers’ feedback.”

While Udaari introduced us to the dark side of Ahsan Khan who played a child molester in the play and received acclaim for his role, the upcoming drama serial Sammi might just do the same for Siddiqui, who has proven his mettle time and again.
