DC Comics may have struggled while trying to win over critics with their revamped Batman/Superman films, Man of Steel and Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice but things are finally looking up for the studio. Though Justice League, DC’s multi-superhero film has no chance against Marvel’s multi-superhero Avengers especially now that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange has joined their ranks, it is their female-centric films that have the power to endear them to critics and fans alike.
After announcing the female superhero film Wonder Woman with Gal Godat in the lead, DC is now backing an all-female villain(s) film with Suicide Squad director David Ayer at the helm of things. The idea was first pitched to the studio by Margot Robbie, who starred in Suicide Squad as Harley Quinn. In the all-new female centric villain movie, Robbie’s Harley Quinn will return and will be joined by Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Ra’s al Ghul’s daughter Talia while the story has been adapted from a 2009 DC comic called Gotham City Sirens which has been penned by Paul Dini and features artwork by Guillem March. The film will be written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who has also written the script for Sherlock Holmes 3 and the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot.
It is also a poor reflection on Marvel who still haven’t announced (much less fast track) the director for their stand-alone female superhero film titled Captain Marvel. Some also see Gotham City Sirens as a possible follow-up to Suicide Squad. While earlier reports suggested that Will Smith’s Deadshot will get his own stand-alone film first, it seems DC has now settled on this film instead.
