The Night Of star Riz Ahmed recently started this conversation by opening up on racial profiling and stereotypes in an essay that was featured in The Good Immigrant by Nikesh Shukla and now Daniel Radcliffe seems to be joining in. In an interview with BBC, Radcliffe expressed how Hollywood seems progressive but is really “lagging behind.”
The Harry Potter star spoke about many issues, including racism, sexism and politics. “I think there’s lots of things about the Oscars, there’s lots of amazing performances every year that don’t get recognised. I feel like there’s a lot that’s unseen about the process.”
Radcliffe is the newest member to join the #OscarsSoWhite bandwagon, a movement that begun last year in support for cultural diversity at the Oscars.
He also spoke about gender unequality, addressing issues that many others have also raised in Hollywood. “It’s crazy that this still goes on and it’s also in department to department in the industry too. There are some departments that are predominantly male, and again that’s something that is changing, but it’s interesting.”
Also addressing claims of many around him being a feminist, Radcliffe added: “It’s sad that people are having to come out as feminist. I thought we’d have got beyond this point. I would hope it would be assumed of me that I was one. You see amazing male characters, and there is an absolute dearth of roles for women.”
