After playing a homosexual daughter in law in one of Deepa Mehta’s groundbreaking elements series, Fire, the actress is set to act in yet another controversial film based on the life of a homosexual Pakistani actor, writer and activist.

According to DNA India, the film titled Signature Move will see Azmi play a mother to a gay daughter named Fawzia, who is described as a “lesbian, Muslim, Pakistani, actor, activist, writer, producer, lawyer and creature of passion”. Directed by a Pakistani writer and director Fawzia Mirza, the film is an American production and is sort of autobiographical for the director who seems to have based the main character’s journey on her personal life and encounters.

Azmi is known to play roles that are controversial, out of the box and those that don’t limit her capabilities to age and mainstream cinema’s norms. In this film, Azmi will play a mother who is always engrossed in TV, watching soap operas, and is oblivious to her daughter’s sexual orientation and her romantic involvement with a Mexican girl. The film is currently being shot in Chicago.
