Before you start judging, it’s not just high end commercial brands that our celebrities are seen endorsing. Recent past has also witnessed a number of Pakistani celebrities actively take part in social causes; be it Ali Zafar for girls’ education or Gohar Rasheed for Down syndrome. Joining the list is actress Humaima Malick, who has been chosen by the Punjab government to endorse the Women Protection Bill.

According to the press release, Humaima was the first celebrity approached to take on the role. The actress, who was last seen in a rather disastrous Dekh Magar Pyar Se, has been a strong advocate of women’s rights and has actively used the social media platform to speak against age old doctrines that are targeted at oppressing women, including those proposed by the Council of Islamic Ideology. While Humaima has been missing in action for a while (she is currently shooting for Shaan’s Arth 2), it is perhaps her role in the 2011 film Bol that makes her an apt choice for the job. Her character Zainab was at the centre of all domestic abuse and the one who sacrificed her life to save others.

The Women Protection Bill considers any violent behaviour towards women, physical or emotional, a crime and worthy of punishment. It has been dubbed as a groundbreaking initiative by the Punjab government in regards to rising domestic violence.
