Shehla Chatoor Luxury Lawn ****3/4

Shehla Chatoor’s lawn debut with Shariq Textiles is what dreams are made of. For a designer, who has always been so intrinsically committed to luxury fashion (she has been unwilling to step into ready to wear for that reason), to successfully design a product for mass consumption is quite impressive.

Lawn Review # 11

Shehla Chatoor’s lawn debut with Shariq Textiles is what dreams are made of. For a designer, who has always been so intrinsically committed to luxury fashion (she has been unwilling to step into ready to wear for that reason), to successfully design a product for mass consumption is quite impressive. But with her very first lawn collection, Shehla has proven that she has a deep understanding for luxury that works for high-end fashion just as easily as for high-end lawn, if such a thing can exist.

Quality

Silken to the touch and yet lightweight enough to keep it ideal for summer, the fabric quality is superb, ideal for balmy summer evenings. Usually lawn changes form after it has been soaked but I have to say that this one remained quite the same, retaining its luxurious, silken feel. The dupatta is also a pleasure, as it’s got character as well as quality; don’t you just hate it when scarfs and dupattas become limp rags? The cherry on this cake, however, is the embroidered add-ons that come in your lawn goody bag. I’m not a fan of too much fuss on lawn but these embroidered bits and pieces carry the Shehla Chatoor signature and remind me of her luxury clothing. They are delicate and very tasteful.

Design Innovation

If you’re a fan of Shehla Chatoor’s brand then you’ll undoubtedly be a fan of her prints too. She’s incorporated accents of her popular prints and you see hints of the Orient as well as Europe. “The eye must travel,” Diane Vreeland famously said, and these prints certainly are a result of a very well travelled eye. My favourite, I have to say is Sakura, which dabbles in a love for the land of the rising sun (yellow being a hot trend this summer). The prints may get overwhelming at times – most women do not have the height to carry off printed
shalwars/trousers – but what I do is deconstruct the outfit and use the fabric for an extra shirt.

Value for Money

Whoever said that the best things in life are free obviously never shopped for lawn and Shehla’s luxury lawn comes at a hefty price. But is it worth what you spend? If you’re a lover of lawn then yes, you shouldn’t blink twice before spending an extra few hundred rupees on this one. Priced between PKR6900 and PKR7400, it is on the high side but then it comes with so much extra oomph that this becomes an outfit for evenings out not days at work.

Wow Factor

The entire Shehla Chatoor Luxury Lawn campaign has the word WOW printed all over it. From the campaign, featuring a gorgeous Nargis Fakhri in Phuket, to Shehla’s personal identity that has made its way to the collection, it is glamorous as well as sexy, a word we don’t usually associate with lawn. This is eveningwear, resortwear and summer luxe rolled into one.
