LAWN REVIEW # 3

Kamal Limited debuted back in 2012 by collaborating with Elan, one of Pakistan’s leading fashion labels, to launch its lawn range. It later continued to cash in on every Pakistani woman’s love affair with lawn by collaborating with popular designers like Zara Shahjahan and Ayesha Farook Hashwani, while launching its first retail space in Lahore in the midst of it all. However, it seems with most designers preferring to produce lawn in-house so as to expand business, the textile house chose to launch its lawn collection independently, this time around. With the gorgeous Sabika Imam as the face of its Spring/Summer 2016 collection, So Kamal launched its premium lawn range with 10 exclusive designs. Instep gives its verdict:

Quality

Like we’ve said before, there is a visible difference between the feel of Karachi’s lawn fabric and most of Lahore’s. While the former is more refined, the latter has a raw finish to it which is quite evident in So Kamal’s lawn fabric. It is slightly on the rough side. However, rough also means more organic, a trait of pure lawn that is likely to be a life saver as temperatures soar in the following months. That said, if one is marketing it as “premium signature lawn” then a bit of that silken touch is much needed.

Design Innovation

The So Kamal lawn collection consists of 10 exclusive designs in one colour way each paired with chiffon dupattas. The collection does not follow a set theme and as a result, comes across as a mixed bag of old and new designs. Barring a couple of designs, particularly the one interesting take on the Sindhi Ajrak pattern, there is no novelty to the patterns used. In fact, one of them seems heavily inspired from an old, popular Khaadi lawn design. The embroidered add-ons are also not as delicate and intricate and almost feel chunky once appliquéd on the print. The colour combinations however are fresh and exciting. So Kamal also launched another range of digital printed lawn with lawn dupattas which features more interesting designs compared to the premium range.

Value for Money

The lawn is far more reasonable compared to other designer, premium lawns out there. A three-piece unstitched suit along with embroidered add-ons is priced at PKR 4500 and is a good addition to your day wardrobe if you are not so nit-picky about the uniqueness of designs. The digital range is cheaper, priced at PKR 2300.

Wow Factor

The independent version of So Kamal lawn is not as desirable as its previous designer versions since the brand does not have much of a presence outside Lahore and lacks popularity among lawn shoppers. However, it will be a good buy for those who don’t want to see six other women wearing the same print.
