Director Chris Nolan is often considered the filmmaker of this generation, a kind of artist who comes along once in a lifetime. Post-Interstellar, which marked his first foray into the world of space, fans around the world have been waiting to see what Nolan does next. Often secretive about his projects, it has taken months but news of Nolan’s next film is finally here.

As Nolan was spotted in France where he is location scouting, the Warner Bros confirmed that his next film is an “epic action thriller” that will make its way to cinemas in July 2017. The film will tell the story of “legendary evacuation of Dunkirk during World War II, which over the course of eight days saved the lives of 338,226 soldiers from the impending invasion”.

As for the cast, while several principal roles will be filled by newcomers, word has it that Tom Hardy, who worked with Nolan in Inception and the Dark Knight Rises, will return for a third collaboration with the director and will, in all likelihood, be joined by actors Kenneth Branagh, and Bridge of Spies star Mark Rylance.

A longtime champion of celluloid film, Nolan will continue to tinker with the visual palette by shunning CGI (computer-generated imagery) and opting to use real effects. French T-47 Class Destroyer known as Maillé-Brézé, a decommissioned vessel, will be towed to Saint-Nazaire, Brittany, where it will be used for the film.
