Brand: Yahsir Waheed *** 1/2
With over 18 years in the business of lawn, Yahsir Waheed can safely be called one of the pioneers of designer lawn. He has transitioned from the ye olde dynamics of churning out fabric to the modern, grandiose way of creating it as a high end product. And even though some would say that Yahsir’s lawn has lost out on some of its novelty value compared to his contemporaries, there is no denying the hoards of loyalists that flock to his exhibitions year after year. This year was no different, as Yahsir - with his brand new supplementary line of lawn (called Amaltas) alongside regular classics, kick started the lawn season this weekend. Here is a lowdown on how it fared on our lawn-o-meter:
Quality
Yahsir Waheed’s lawn is by far the most organic lawn one can get their hands on – it can hold its own, is light and breezy without being transparent and is soft to touch. However, unlike bigger labels, Yahsir’s lawn doesn’t have the silky sheen that’s added to give the fabric a more polished feel and perhaps that’s what limits it for daily, casual use.
Design Innovation
This year the designer upped the ante with a new line of lawn called Amaltas to tap into the more dressy side of lawn with chiffon dupattas and embroidered add-ons. While some of the patterns, particularly the geometric ones in chevrons and checks, combined with contrasting floral prints created a much-welcome sartorial cacophony, others were merely commonplace. Colour combinations, however, are the designer’s favourite instruments of creating contradiction and one loved the canary against chocolate brown and the indigo against lime green.
Value for Money
Retailing at an average of PKR 3500 per outfit, Yahsir Waheed lawn is a great buy to meet your daily lawn needs. Pricing is a strong feature of the label and the best thing is that one can choose from a two-piece or a three-piece, with embroidery or without embroidery and lawn dupatta or chiffon dupatta. Add-ons are priced separately for PKR 390 and the chiffon dupattas come at a higher price but all options fall well within the affordable range. There is no restriction and this allows women to play with their own sense of design and creativity.
Wow Factor
While the lawn has developed a considerable fan following by being consistent over the years, it lacks the wow factor that would make it one’s instant-buy. It’s affordable, utilitarian and everyday lawn but not something that you would wear to make a fashion statement. It doesn’t rate very high on the ‘IT’ status.
