ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Friday issued a show cause notice to KElectric over the power breakdown in Karachi.

According to the show cause notice, KElectric has failed to deliver uninterrupted power to its consumers. Additionally the regulator has noted that KElectric has failed to fulfill the terms of license and has continued to violate the clauses present in its license.

The regulator has found KElectric to have failed to utilize its full power generation capacity. NEPRA Spokesman said KElectric has deliberately been producing less electricity than its installed capacity.

The NEPRA spokesman added that KElectric did not implement a backup solution in case of a power breakdown. Additionally the spokesman claimed that KElectric misled NEPRA and provided incorrect information.

Following a major breakdown in Karachi during the holy month of Ramazan, NEPRA constituted a special committee to investigate the matter. The Spokesman added that KElectric did not provide the investigation committee with accurate information.

The show cause notice has been issued under section 28 and 29 of the NEPRA Act, the spokesman said.

Responding to the claims KElectric spokesman Usama Qureshi said, there are certain elements in NEPRA that oppose KElectric. When NEPRA’s investigation committee came to Karachi all cooperation was extended to them. NEPRA had assured KElectric that a meeting would be held between the two before any report was released, Qureshi added.

Qureshi maintained KElectric has not received any show cause notice as yet and will respond befittingly if any is received. The spokesman added that NEPRA always sends its show cause notices to the media first.
