Former CEC Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim passes away

KARACHI:  Prominent jurist and former chief election commissioner  Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim passed away on Tuesday in Karachi.

His funeral prayers would be offered in Noor Bagh Mewa Shah graveyard in Karachi today at 07:00pm.

Ebrahim held a number of prominent posts throughout his career in government set-ups and also in the profession of law. Born on February 12, 1928, the renowned jurist also served as the governor Sindh. 

Ebrahim, a former Supreme Court judge, was appointed as the CEC on 23 July, 2012, by former president Zardari after being approved by a parliamentary panel. 

The May 11, 2013 general elections and the presidential election were held during his tenure. 

 He was also among a few others such as Justice S. Anwarul Haq, Justice Maulvi Mushtaq Hussain and Justice Dorab Patel — all of whom refused to take oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) drafted by then-army chief General Zia-ul-Haq. 

During Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's government, he had served as the attorney general of Pakistan.

After Farooq Leghari dismissed former prime minister Benazir Bhutto's government in 1991, he was appointed as the federal law minister in the caretaker set-up that followed. 

COAS expresses grief on demise of Fakhruddin G Ebrahim

Chief Of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa expressed grief on the demise of former chief election commissioner, Fakhruddin G Ebrahim, on Tuesday, said Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Asif Ghafoor.

According to the DG ISPR, the army chief also prayed for the departed soul.

"May Allah bless the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family, Aamen," the DG ISPR quoted the army chief was saying.
