KARACHI: At least 33 people have died in the past 24 hours in different areas of interior Sindh, including Hyderabad, Tando Allah Yar and Hala.
According to Edhi spokesperson Mairaj Khan, 19 people died in the last 24 hours from heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses in Hyderabad.
At least five people died from similar causes in Tando Allah Yar while sources said that ine people lost their lives in the last 24 hours from heat-related illnesses in Hala area of Mithiari.
The 33 deaths do not include those killed in Karachi, where the severe heat wave has claimed at least 748 lives in the last four days.
While the Sindh government has imposed a state of emergency at all hospitals, cancelling leave for doctors and other medical staff and increasing stocks of medical supplies, doctors have appealed that people should avoid going out in the sun unnecessarily and should wash their face multiple times a day in order to stay cool during the heat wave.
Dr Seemi Jamali at the Jinnah Hospital in Karachi has advised that people should wear loose-fitting clothes that allow for air to permeate through. If there is no electricity then people should opt for using hand-fans to keep themselves cool.
According to experts, people are vulnerable to the heat wave due to their low internal resistance and have advised using as much water as possible.
Temperatures remained at around 44.5 Celsius in Karachi on Tuesday but thunderstorms were forecast for the next three days, the Meteorological Office said, increasing hopes for a decline in the severe heat wave.
