In spite of her unsurmountable contribution for Pakistani television and cinema many in the country could not fathom the concept of Mehwish Hayat getting awarded on a national level with a Tamgha-e-Imtiaz for her services and continued to attach degrading labels with her questioning her success.
While the critics voiced out their remarks on a large scale, Pakistani social media users as well as insiders from the industry came out in a much larger number to support the 36-year-old Load Wedding star as she called out her haters and slammed them in a thought-provoking Twitter thread.
“Debate all you like whether you think I deserve the award. Every1 is entitled to their opinions. I respect that. However, I draw the line when my character is questioned. I’ve been called a tawaif, a slut, a whore & much more so often that it has stopped affecting me.” read her tweet.
She goes on to say: “I never wanted to make this a gender thing but it is unfortunate that others seem to be. To suggest that I slept my way to this award is an abhorrent slur on all the hard working women in our country.”
“We may be part of an industry that is seen to be glamorous - but it doesn’t mean that we have forsaken our morals. What gives anybody the right to drag my name into the gutter. You don’t know me! Thank you to all the supporters & also to all the haters, it has only made me stronger.Last couple weeks have been quite an eye-opener for me,” she adds further.
Soon after her public outrage against the baseless labels, a plethora of support flooded in with stalwarts from the industry to fans and social media users standing beside her in support.
