ISLAMABAD: Foreign Office has said that captured Indian pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was treated in Pakistan with dignity and in line with international law.
Shortly after Abhinandan was handed over the Indian authorities at Wagah border, Foreign Office confirmed the captured Indian Air Force pilot has been returned to India today.
Abhinandan was arrested when his military jet MIG-21 crashed in Azad Jammu & Kashmir after being shot down by Pakistan Air Force for violating Pakistani airspace on February 27, 2019.
“While in captivity, Abhinandan was treated with dignity and in line with international law,” said the statement.
The Foreign Office added “Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan announced his return as a goodwill gesture aimed at de-escalating rising tensions with India.”
