ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) Senator Nehal Hashmi had to resign on Wednesday from the upper house of the parliament and party position following his threatening speech against what he said the opponents of the prime minister.
His speech was seen as an open threat to the members of the Joint Investigation Team that was set up to investigate foreign assets of the ruling family in the light of Supreme Court verdict in Panama Papers case last month.
According to Geo News, Hashmi, also General Secretary of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) Sindh Chapter, has been asked by the prime minister to resign from the Senate beside quitting the party office.
He was also issued a show-cause notice before further action is taken by the government, Geo News reported.
Speaking to the TV channel, State Minister for Information Marriyum Auranzeb said nobody would to humiliate state institutions.
A spokesman for the PMLN said basic membership party of Hashmi has also been suspended.
In a video that went viral on the internet, the Senator was seen openly threatening those who have sought to make Prime Minister and his children accountable in Panama Papers case.
“We are workers of Nawaz Sharif, those who have made Sharif family accountable and are doing so will not be spared. You are in service today and will retire tomorrow".
“We, the Pakistani nation will make it difficult for you and your family to live in this country like you are making it difficult for an honourable Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif,” he warned.
Without naming Imran Khan, Nehal Hashmi also lambasted PTI chief, saying those living in Bani Gala should listen it carefully that the residence of Sharif family in model town was neither made with the Jews’ money nor with the wealth of Jemima, Khan’s former wife.
