Sridevi completes 50 years in Indian film industry

MUMBAI: Actress Sridevi is going to complete her fifty years in the Indian film industry this year and her husband Boney Kapoor is planning to host a grand party to celebrate it.

She has been doing films since the age of four but her level of enthusiasm remains unparalleled, said a source.

Born on August 13, 1963, Sridevi started her career in 1967and continued to act as a child artist in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films. She made her Bollywood debut as a child artist in the hit Julie (1975) and played her first adult role at age 13 with a Tamil film in 1976.

Subsequently, Sridevi established herself as one of the leading actresses of Tamil and Telugu cinema, with some memorable roles. In Bollywood, she made her debut as a lead actress in Solva Sawan (1978) and gained wide public attention with the movie Himmatwala (1983). She appeared in a string of commercially successful movies until 1997.

In 2012, Sridevi returned to films after a 15-year-long hiatus with English Vinglish and became the only actress in the history of Hindi and Tamil cinema to make a highly successful comeback.

In her career, Sridevi worked in more than 300 films and has won five Filmfare awards. The Government of  India awarded her Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honor, in 2013. She was also voted 'India's Greatest Actress in 100 Years' in a CNN-IBN national poll conducted in 2013 on the occasion of the Centenary of Indian Cinema.

Sridevi has the singular honour of playing the lead with three pairs of fathers and sons — Nageswara Rao and son Nagarjuna, Dharmendra and his son Sunny Deol and now Vinod Khanna and his son Akshaye Khanna in her new film Mom.

In Mom, Sridevi plays a mother on an avenging spree. The film also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Akshay Khanna besides Adnan Siddiqui and Sajal Ali from Pakistan. It is slated to release on July 14.
