NATO sends warning to Putin after Russian drones strike close to Poland

NATO has pledged additional support for Ukraine and stronger defences along its eastern flank after Russian drone strikes hit close to the Polish border.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said Monday that the 32-member alliance would not be deterred from supporting Kyiv following attacks near NATO territory.

“The strikes yesterday on trains in Ukraine close to NATO territory again show Putin’s desperation and also his desire to sow fear and terror,” Rutte said in Brussels.

“Russia is growing increasingly reckless as it continues its terrible war against Ukraine.”

Russian drones struck a train near the Ukraine-Poland border on Sunday, shortly after a diplomatic delegation including former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson passed through the station, according to Ukraine’s state rail operator.

Poland has since pledged to increase security along its border with Ukraine.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that Russian escalation could potentially reach Polish territory.

“These coming weeks and months will be a time of very intensified actions on the Russian side, and unfortunately we cannot rule out that this escalation will also affect our territory,” Tusk said.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump claimed Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop attacking each other’s energy infrastructure.

“Ukraine has agreed not to hit Russian Energy targets. Russia has agreed to do, likewise!” Trump wrote. Neither Russia nor Ukraine has confirmed such an agreement.
