UK minister condemns anti-migrant protests in Portsmouth and Dover

The British government has strongly condemned a weekend of coordinated, disruptive anti-migrant demonstrations across southern England that saw protesters block traffic and clash with police in both Portsmouth and Dover.

Speaking to media outlets, Treasury Chief Secretary Emma Reynolds labeled the actions of the demonstrators as "thuggish and intimidating behaviour," emphasizing that the gatherings crossed the line from peaceful assembly into public disorder.

The unrest unfolded across consecutive days, beginning with masked protesters disrupting traffic routes near the primary ferry port of Dover on Saturday, followed by a large mobilization in Portsmouth late Sunday.

The demonstrations were triggered by a shift in smuggling tactics that brought a vessel carrying approximately 140 asylum seekers directly to Portsmouth—a departure from traditional landing points further east.

While government data indicates that overall small-boat arrivals have decreased compared to previous years, the rapid digital organization of far-right factions has intensified political friction over border management. 

Local emergency services and police forces managed to restore order at both locations, while officials continue to review security protocols around processing facilities.

"Perhaps the scale of the protest was something that we hadn't seen before, but the police have brought this under control," said Reynolds, chief secretary, on Monday when asked about the protests in Portsmouth.
