A large-scale study of vulnerable older adults reveals that receiving the modern Shingrix shingles vaccine is associated with a substantial reduction in the risk of a dementia diagnosis over a four-year period.
While evaluating the outcome, researchers tracked over more than 500,000 older adults reveals that the recombinant shingles vaccine called "Shingrix" is associated with a 24% lower risk of a dementia diagnosis over a four-year period.
They compared patients who received at least one dose of the recombinant shingles vaccine, known as RZV or Shingrix, with patients who remained unvaccinated.
As reported by ScienceDaily, a group of researchers analyzed medicare claims and electronic health records for patients admitted to skilled nursing facilities between 2017 and 2022, creating a real-world evaluation window for a high-risk demographic.
The results revealed, over the four-year follow-up, dementia developed in 18.8% of vaccinated participants, compared to 24.6% of those who remained unvaccinated.
Investigators estimate, this difference translates to roughly one dementia case prevented for every 17 people vaccinated.
While the observational data cannot definitively prove direct cause-and-effect, researchers believe the findings align with a growing body of evidence.
Potential mechanisms include preventing the systemic inflammation and vascular complications tied to herpes zoster flare-ups, or broader immune-boosting neuroprotective effects.
Scientists emphasize that while confounding lifestyle factors were adjusted for, randomized clinical trials will be necessary to fully establish whether the vaccine directly preserves cognitive function.
