Canada hits back with retaliatory tariffs after US trade talks collapse

The trade dispute between Canada and the United States has escalated significantly following the breakdown of bilateral negotiations in Washington.

In a recent update Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney hint for new tariffs ahead.

Following the collapse of talks, the United States moved forward with 50% tariffs impacting approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods roughly 5.5% of Canada's exports to the US, affecting sectors ranging from cement to hockey equipment.

Carney announced that Canada will enact "dollar-for-dollar" retaliatory counter-tariffs starting September 8. These measures will specifically target US industries, including steel, dairy, electronics, appliances, and agricultural equipment.

As reported by Aljazeera, the Canadian Prime Minister stated that the talks collapsed after the US introduced late, unacceptable terms, including restrictions on Canada's ability to forge other international trade deals and provisions impacting domestic sovereignty and culture. 

Meanwhile, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that Washington is moving forward with measures responding to Canada's actions and that no new talks are currently scheduled.

Business groups and border-state lawmakers have voiced sharp concerns over the escalating trade tensions, warning that the tariffs will drive up operational costs for businesses and raise prices for consumers on both sides of the border.

Carney, speaking in Ottawa on Saturday, said the new Canadian tariffs would target US steel, dairy and electronics industries among others and take effect on September 8, 2026.
