Amazon redesigns AI data centres to train next AGI model: Report

Amazon is redesigning part of a sprawling AI data centre campus in rural Indiana, consolidating multiple facilities into a single powerful cluster aimed at training its next frontier AI model, according to internal planning documents reviewed by Business Insider.

The effort, described internally as "AGI Pivot," is tied to the company's in-house AGI organisation.

The documents indicate Amazon's frontier-model ambitions remain intact despite job cuts within its AGI division and the wind-down of its earlier Nova model series.

Faster deployment schedules are reportedly designed to give the AGI team enough computing power to train its next major model before the end of the year, reflecting urgency amid industry-wide capacity constraints.

One person familiar with the effort told Business Insider the push has "not slowed down" despite last month's layoffs.

The Indiana site includes facilities tied to Project Rainier, the Trainium-powered supercomputer Amazon built primarily for Anthropic, though the new initiative will not affect those existing servers.

Planning documents describe an "emergent request" to deploy more than 6,000 Trainium-powered servers, accelerating timelines by several weeks to prepare a model ahead of this year's re:Invent conference.

It is reported that Amazon is rethinking its networking, storage, and fiber optic infrastructure so that several data centers operate together as what it terms an AGI SuperCluster, using some of the buildings as "annexes" with core networking infrastructure shared between other adjacent facilities.

Amazon has increased its 2026 forecast for capital expenditure by $20 billion, reaching $220 billion, while its custom silicon business, which includes Trainium and Graviton chips, is expected to bring in more than $25 billion in revenue each year.
