Microsoft signs billion-bollar deal to scale Mistral AI in Europe

Microsoft has agreed to invest billions of dollars in expanding Mistral AI’s computing infrastructure in Europe.

The tech giant said on Tuesday, the deal will expand distribution of the French AI startup's technology through the U.S. cloud and Software Giant.

As part of the agreement, Microsoft Azure customers will be able to develop software using Mistral's data centers in France, giving Microsoft more capacity in Europe and regulated industries an alternative to U.S.-controlled infrastructure.

The partnership will also make Mistral’s AI technology more widely available through Microsoft’s cloud and software ecosystem.

Instead of having to build and power every data center facility itself in Europe, Microsoft gains immediate, flexible cloud compute capacity by tapping directly into Mistral's expanding French data center footprint.

Adding Mistral’s Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 models into Microsoft Foundry and Copilot Studio gives enterprise developers immediate out-of-the-box tools to build sovereign AI agents.

By enabling Mistral's open models to run locally on Azure Local in fully air-gapped (offline) configurations, highly regulated sectors—like defense, banking, and public health—can utilize advanced models without sending sensitive data over external networks.

Precisely, the multibillion-dollar deal between Microsoft and Mistral AI expands their strategic partnership to deliver sovereign AI capabilities across cloud and edge environments.
