Liam Payne's struggles with substance abuse, stemming from unresolved personal issues, tragically culminated in his death in a Buenos Aires hotel in October, according to his ex-fiancée.
In a Rolling Stone cover story released Tuesday, she detailed their relationship, including her pursuit of legal action against him in the period leading up to his death.
Her upcoming 2024 book, Looking Forward, based on "true events," chronicles their tumultuous relationship with the troubled One Direction singer.
“While I loved him deeply, he did things that hurt me in ways I’ll never fully understand, and he continued to hurt me years after we broke up,” Henry, who later discovered Payne shared with friends intimate photos of her for years, told Rolling Stone in a mailed statement.
“On drugs, he became someone unrecognizable — so different from his sober self. I kept hoping each incident would be a wake-up call for him to get help, but it never was. I tried to be there for him. I loved him so much that I convinced myself I could fix things.
“I knew there were parts of himself he was struggling with — parts of his identity he wasn’t ready to fully face, even within our relationship,” Henry added in her statement.
“In the end, it wasn’t just the betrayals or the addictions that broke us — it was the realization that I had spent years in something that was never what I thought it was. I don’t fault him for his struggles.”
According to the magazine, Payne's battle with his sexuality was mentioned in a number of publications. One person, who wishes to remain nameless, told the magazine, "He se*ted men during his relationship with Maya."
According to a male waiter Payne met in Argentina and who is accused of giving the pop star narcotics, the two had s*x in the hotel room where he passed away a few days later.
According to the magazine, which cites unnamed individuals, Payne had been harassing Henry over the phone after their breakup. She allegedly asked solicitors to investigate how to "seek legal remedies" after discovering that Payne had shared private images dating back to their engagement.
Days before he died, Payne was with his girlfriend, influencer Kate Cassidy, at the CasaSur in the Palermo neighbourhood of the Argentine capital.
Following his frantic final hours, which included hiring s*x workers, destroying parts of his room, and having a public meltdown in the lobby, he fell 40 feet from the balcony.
