Will Ferrell joked about losing Sexiest Man Alive to John Krasinski.

The comic actor is not giving up his dream of being named PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive

During his January 28 appearance on the Today show, the 57-year-old actor playfully expressed his disappointment at not earning the title last year, despite his lighthearted efforts to campaign for it.

Co-host Savannah Guthrie reminded Ferrell of their earlier conversation about his ambitions for the coveted honor.

“Yes, [my campaign] started here,” Ferrell quipped. “And maybe this was the wrong place to start it. I got zero votes.”

Guthrie, clearly on Ferrell’s side, responded indignantly. “That can’t be! I didn’t have a vote, but I would vote for you.”

Ferrell explained how he tried to "launch" his campaign during the Despicable Me 4 premiere in New York City in 2024 but felt it didn’t gain enough traction.

Now, he’s strategizing for 2025. “I think I may need to do a preemptive photoshoot,” he said. “Pay for some billboards around LA and New York. Influencers, get it going that way.”

When asked about the 2024 titleholder, Ferrell admitted he doesn't remember. “Does anybody remember?” Guthrie teased, with Craig Melvin chiming in, “Who was it?”

Guthrie added, “If it was you, everyone would remember.”

Melvin eventually spoke up that John Krasinski was the 2024 Sexiest Man Alive. Ferrell begrudgingly replied, “Okay. All right. I guess… I don’t get it.” Melvin quipped, “You don’t see what they see.”

Ferrell’s campaign for the title dates back to June 2024 at the Despicable Me 4 premiere, where he told PEOPLE he was “planting the seeds” for a chance to grace the cover. “Because you guys never have comedians,” he said, urging, “So get it going internally, all right? Sexiest Man.”

He expressed his dedication for the title during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, telling the host, “I have to be one of the leading vote-getters as of right now,” while referencing his dramatic pose at the premiere, where he sported a white tracksuit.

Ferrell emphasized on Today show that his campaign was serious.

“It’s time,” he declared. “They never have comedians. Can you think of one? I can’t.” Guthrie reminded him that Paul Rudd had won the title, to which Ferrell responded, “Paul’s funny, but not there.”

“I’ve never wanted anything more badly than Sexiest Man Alive,” he added.

Meanwhile, Krasinski shared his reaction to winning the 2024 title with PEOPLE, saying he went into an “immediate blackout” upon hearing the news.

“Zero thoughts,” he explained. “Other than maybe I’m being punked. That’s not how I wake up usually, thinking, ‘Is this the day that I’ll be asked to be Sexiest Man Alive?’ And yet it was the day you guys did it. You really raised the bar for me.”
