SZA recently honoured Drew Barrymore for being a major inspiration in her musical journey.
During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, SZA revealed how her 2017 hit song Drew Barrymore, was not just named after the Charlie’s Angles actress but was also inspired by her.
"It was inspired by you. It wasn't just titled after you," said the Grammy winner. “The energy that you carry even my outfit is inspired by the way you've made me feel my entire life, like, carefree."
The Kill Bill singer went on to explain that she once wrote a letter to Barrymore but never sent it. In the letter, she described how as a black young woman, it was difficult to find role models, so she looked up to Barrymore for being her authentic self.
"I have a slight speech impediment, and people laugh all the time, like, ‘What is SZA saying?’ And it's a running joke. But I love the way you talk and just all the you-ness of you, your laugh, even in the movies and in real life," she added.
Barrymore then recalled the conversation she and SZA had while filming for Drew Barrymore music in video, in 2017.
She admitted that at the time, she thought her name and the song title was coincidental and nothing deeper, but after hearing the explanation it now gave her a new perspective.
The song Drew Barrymore is from SZA’s debut studio album Ctrl which was released on June 9, 2017.
