Isabella Rossellini’s guest appearance on Friends might be unforgettable to fans, but the actress herself didn’t think she was famous enough to play "herself" on the hit sitcom.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Italian movie star opened up about her “delightful” cameo in the iconic 1996 episode, noting that she was initially “surprised” to receive the request.
“At the time — maybe still today, but maybe to less extent at the time — there weren't many foreign actors that were recognised in America,” Rossellini said. “So I was very surprised that Friends invited me, not only as a guest but as a star. They recognise me and they know my name. So I was very... I said, ‘Really? Am I that known that I can play myself as a known person?’”
Her appearance came during a hilarious storyline where the gang discusses which celebrities they're allowed to sleep with while being in relationships. Ross (David Schwimmer) initially picked Rossellini, but after overthinking, swapped her for a less “international” choice. Ironically, Ross eventually meets Rossellini at Central Perk, only to realise he made a huge mistake.
When he explains the "list" concept, Rossellini jokingly shuts him down, saying, “I have a list of five goofy coffeehouse guys, and yesterday, I bumped you for that guy over there.”
By the time of the season three episode titled 'The One With Frank Jr.,' Rossellini was already an established star, with notable films like Blue Velvet and Death Becomes Her under her belt. She currently stars in the thriller Conclave, which is in theaters now.
