Rosie Perez revealed it was her who hooked up Tupac Shaklur with Madonna.
During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Perez shared that she played matchmaker between her close friend Tupac Shakur and pop icon Madonna.
Perez recounted how, three decades ago, she introduced the late rapper and the Material Girl singer at the 1993 Soul Train Music Awards.
Perez, 60, revealed that Shakur had stepped in as her date at the last minute after her original date cancelled on her just before the event.
“My date called and said, ‘I can’t go with you because my girlfriend will see me,’” she shared. Shortly after, Shakur phoned her and offered to attend the event with her, reassuring her, “We’re going to walk up in there like we’re on a date, and he’s going to die.”
At the awards show, Perez ran into Madonna, who asked if she and Shakur were dating. After Perez clarified they were just friends, Madonna asked if she could introduce her to him. Perez happily agreed, responding, “You got it!”
Shakur and Madonna kept their romance mostly private, reportedly dating on and off for nearly two years until they parted ways in January 1995.
