Prince Andrew remains locked in a standoff with King Charles over his refusal to leave the Royal Lodge in Windsor, despite the King's decision to cut off his £1.3 million annual allowance.
According to royal commentator Hugo Vickers, the Duke of York fears that complying with Charles's demand could appear as if he’s publicly accepting guilt for allegations tied to his past.
Now 64, Prince Andrew has resisted relocating to Frogmore Cottage, the former home of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, which Charles has suggested as a more suitable option.
Currently residing in the Royal Lodge with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, Andrew’s reluctance to move may stem from deeper concerns regarding public perception and potential implications.
Hugo Vickers observed, "What I think he feels is that if he moves out of Royal Lodge it's somehow publicly accepting guilt for which he has not been proved," referencing the 2022 out-of-court settlement related to Virginia Giuffre.
Financially strained, Andrew reportedly struggles to cover the mounting maintenance costs for the Royal Lodge, which has significant repair needs. However, the Duke is intent on remaining, reportedly spending his time with family, golfing, and enjoying Windsor’s grounds.
Vickers added that relocating to Frogmore Cottage could be an ideal solution, as it sits within the Windsor security boundary. "If Andrew proves to be obstinate and refuses to go, then I imagine things will get worse," Vickers warned, noting that King Charles could ultimately command Andrew to leave.
