Andrew Garfield wasn’t shocked when the now-infamous horse meme from We Live in Time went viral. In fact, he kind of saw it coming.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the 41-year-old actor admitted that as soon as he saw the image, he knew it was going to blow up.
“I saw it and thought, ‘Oh, that’s distracting,’” he said, noting that he was probably just being “hyper-vigilant’ and that the creators “[knew] what they’re doing.”
The Amazing Spider-Man star recalled returning from a six-day retreat to his phone blowing up with the meme that had quickly gone viral. He admitted, “It’s very distracting and prominent in the frame. It was a mistake.”
In the new film, which premiers on Oct. 11, Garfield stars alongside Florence Pugh in a story of love and heartbreak. But it was a leaked image featuring a wild-eyed carousel horse intruding on one of their romantic scenes that stole the spotlight.
The bizarre shot quickly took over the internet, with the horse being photoshopped into famous movie moments and even getting featured in Stephen Colbert’s monologue. Colbert quipped, “That pony is tripping balls on ketamine.”
At the end of the day, Garfield found the meme amusing, saying, “It’s created a lot of joyful content for a lot of people, including myself. I cried with laughter when I discovered all the memes.”
Even director John Crowley was surprised, but he found the whole situation hilarious, noting that the horse was just a real carousel horse from a Victorian steam fair. Now, he says, “Those horses… will never look the same to me again.”
