James Middleton, the younger brother of Princess Kate, might be part of one of the world's most renowned families, but on a rainy summer afternoon in Bucklebury, Berkshire, his focus is on a different kind of star: his six beloved dogs.

These energetic pups are all descendants of his cherished pets, including the late cocker spaniel Ella, whose memory lives on in his upcoming memoir, Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life, set for release in the U.S. on September 24.

In the memoir, Middleton opens up about how Ella was a lifeline during his darkest days, including a harrowing night in 2017 when he battled suicidal thoughts.

Ella was a steadfast companion through significant moments in his life, from his sister’s royal wedding to Prince William in 2011, to Christmases with the late Queen Elizabeth.

Reflecting on his memoir, Middleton tells PEOPLE, "It took me on a journey. I hope that my son is able to learn about his own mental health way before I did, so that he doesn’t have to go through some of the very painful moments that I went through."

James Middleton, who has faced the challenges of clinical depression, ADD, and dyslexia, is channeling his experiences into his company, James & Ella.

This venture focuses on producing ethical dog food and highlighting the crucial support dogs provide during tough times.

Middleton’s personal battles are deeply etched in his memoir.

In it, he recounts a life-altering night in November 2017 when he contemplated jumping from his London apartment roof.

Ella, his steadfast companion, was a beacon of hope that prevented him from taking that tragic step.

His parents, Carole and Michael, along with his sisters, Kate and Pippa Middleton, rallied around him during this difficult period.

Reflecting on the family's approach to mental health, Middleton shares, "We speak more openly now about our own mental health as a family. That is a great thing."

He adds that the support and pride he feels from his family, especially in light of his book’s revelations, have brought them even closer together.

"The embrace of a hug from a family member means more than words. We're a close family, but it’s brought us together. I know they're proud of me for telling my story."
