Ben Affleck always shied away from the limelight due to personal issues and openly discussed it, in contrast to Jennifer Lopez.
The Marry Me star and the Hypnotic star headed for divorce after a troubled two-year marriage.
Their problems started in May, before their second anniversary. Lopez filed for divorce and said they separated on April 26.
The divorce process might be complicated because they didn't sign a prenuptial agreement, so they'll have to divide their millions of dollars in assets.
Some old comments from Affleck suggest that he might have had doubts about marriage, which could make Lopez wonder if the divorce was avoidable.
In a 1999 interview with Playboy, Affleck shared his thoughts on relationships. At the time, he was becoming a Hollywood star after his roles in Good Will Hunting and Armageddon.
He spoke candidly about his approach to romance and dealing with a partner.
"During the course of a relationship, if you get dissatisfied and unhappy and don't say something, if you don't deal with it right then, it just festers and stays there," Affleck explained.
"So instead of saying, 'Look, don't do that, please don't act this way,' I go along with it until I just don't want to be in the relationship at all."
The actor admitted that in past relationships, including his first romance with Lopez (2002-2004) and his marriage to Jennifer Garner (2005), he struggled with controlling his anger, which ultimately contributed to the breakdown of those relationships.
"I create some incident or do something or just don't call. And then she's pissed. And I can't necessarily blame her at that point since I've developed such a passive-aggressive rage that I have no sympathy and tell her, 'Well of course I didn't call you. If you weren't such a nagging, shrewish harpy, I'd call you,'" Affleck said.
"But that hopefully is something I'm growing out of."
