House of Dragon showrunner and co-creator Ryan Condal announced during a press conference on Monday that the series will run for a total of four seasons.
Condal confirmed that the show will conclude with Season 4, and that the third season is currently being written.
He added that production on Season 3 is expected to begin in "earlyish 2025", with prep work set to take place this fall.
The show creator also teased about how long Season 3 will be. Condal said: “I haven’t had discussions with HBO about it. I would just anticipate the cadence of the show, from a dramatic storytelling perspective, will continue to be the same from Season 2 on.”
The second season of House of the Dragon concludes with Sunday's finale, setting the stage for an all-out war between the rival Targaryen factions for the Iron Throne.
Notably, HBO and Max had already renewed the series for a third season before the second season even began.
"George, Ryan, and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast, and crew, have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season of House of the Dragon," Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said at the time.
"We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season 2, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for season 3."
The upcoming seasons of House of the Dragon are expected to feature a returning cast, including Matt Smith, Emma D'Arcy, and many others, pending their characters' survival in the season 2 finale.
Additionally, another Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is in development, based on George Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas.
Seasons 1 and 2 of House of the Dragon are currently available on HBO and Max, with seasons 3 and 4 confirmed to follow.
