Sabrina Carpenter on 'me espresso' lyrics: 'It just felt right'
Sabrina Carpenter release 'Espresso' on April 12 before it spent 12 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart
Sabrina Carpenter candidly shared her thought process behind penning the lyrics for her chart-topping song, Espresso.
The 25-year-old pop star appeared at the Hot Ones on Thursday, July 11, and was asked about her strategy for writing catchy lyrics similar to those in her recent song.
"I do like to pay attention to… if people can understand lyrics," the Please Please Please hitmaker told host Sean Evans.
"So much of what I like is the punchline" she added. "If people don’t know the punchline, it’s like, waste."
"That’s how I feel about 'me espresso,'" Carpenter continued, "I’ve heard a lot of people that were like, 'She should’ve said, 'That’s that blonde espresso, duh.'"
"And I’m like, 'Well, yes. That is another song as well that deserves its spot in the world, but this one for me … 'me espresso,'" the Girl Meets World alum concluded, "just felt like the right thing to say, and it rhymes with the line before it."
The songstress released Espresso on April 12, followed by the debut live rendition during her stint at the Coachella music festival.
Carpenter, who went with her 'just felt right' instinct in the lyrical work of Espresso, peaked at third position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with the hit song.
