In a stunning victory, Switzerland defeated reigning champions Italy 2-0, pushing them out of the Euro 2024.
The Swiss team outplayed the two-time winners, etching their way to the quarterfinals, AFP reported.
Head coach Murat Yakin congratulated the team and said, "I’m proud of our team and the fans in the stand. We played a domineering style of play. It is important we won, but it is so rewarding the way that we won."
Switzerland's lead was immediately doubled at the beginning of the second half as Ruben Vargas set up Remo Freuler for the game's first goal in the 37th minute.
Italy, short on star power and without many key figures, offered little in response to Switzerland’s energetic display.
The closest Italy came to scoring in the first hour was when Swiss defender Fabian Schar misjudged a header and hit the frame of his own goal.
Italy’s captain and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, responding to the loss, said, "It hurts, it really hurts."
"We can only say sorry to everyone, we were disappointing today, and they deserved to win. We struggled all game long."
Switzerland will now face England or Slovakia in the quarter-finals in Düsseldorf next Saturday.
Rohit said, "This was my last game as well. No better time to say goodbye to this format
