Camila Cabello got candid about her public relationship with Shawn Mendes and fears of it overshadowing her identity as an artist.
Speaking to Complex magazine, the 27-year-old singer reflected on success of her hit 2019 track Senorita, which also kick-started her romance with Mendes.
"I think there's always a worry when a song becomes so massive that it's going to be bigger than you,” she shared. “I obviously love that they were so massive and successful. But it does get people attached to you in a certain light.
Directly addressing her relationship with the Treat You Better singer, Camilla added: “I was in a really public relationship, and as a woman, you're like, ‘I don't want this couple thing to be my new identity'."
Cabello and Mendes were romantically linked following release of the steamy song; prior to that, the duo had been friends for years.
They ended up parting ways in 2021.
The former couple briefly reconnected in summer last year; however, it didn’t work out.
During an appearance on Call Her Daddy podcast earlier this year, the Fifth Harmony alum addressed their short-lived reconciliation with Mendes.
"It took us both less time to be like, 'This doesn’t feel right and we don’t need to try so hard to make it work. It’s all good,' " she shared at the time. "I will always care about him and love him. He’s a really kind, good person.”
