Why does Cristiano Ronaldo stand sideways during national anthem singing?
Al Nassr player will be aiming to lift the European Championship for the second time as he leads Portugal in Germany this summer
As star footballer Cristiano Ronaldo leads Portugal in the European Championship, this may be his last time to prove his prowess in a major international tournament.
Ronaldo, who will be turning 40 years old soon, will lead his home country in the Euro 2024, Talk Sport reported.
As the Portuguese player will be seen on European grounds one last time, fans have highlighted this unique fact about the Al Nassr player, that he stands sideways in the line-up of players during the singing of the Portuguese national anthem.
When the anthem begins, the former Real Madrid player turns to the side and stands at an angle to sing while the squad wraps their arms around one another.
He does this so that, during the national song, he can face the Portuguese flag in the stadium in a patriotic gesture.
Over the years, Ronaldo has established this as a custom as a way to honour his nation before the game starts.
Although the veteran's iconic position on the international scene may be coming to an end at Euro 2024, Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has been eager to emphasise why the player is still so vital.
He said, A player who scores 42 goals in 41 games for his club shows continuity, a physical ability to always be fit, and quality in front of goal that we really like and need.”
