A Democratic Minnesota state senator was arrested for suspicion of burglarising a house on Monday, USA Today reported.
Nicole Mitchell was found inside a house in Detroit Lake, four hours away from Woodbury, which she represents.
Mitchel, 49, was arrested after the home owner complained of burglary at around 4:45pm.
When the police arrived, they found a woman inside. Mitchell is being held at Becker County Jail on first-degree burglary suspicion.
Mitchell previously worked as a meteorologist with the United States military and Minnesota Public Radio. She was elected to the senate in 2022 from the St Paul district.
She still serves as a lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard, where she commands a weather unit.
The police have refused to share any details about the suspected burglary.
County property tax records show that Mitchell’s stepmother and her late father lived on the block where the alleged burglary occurred.
The Senate Democratic Caucus, in a statement, said that it's "aware of the situation and has no comment pending further information."
Republican Senate Majority Leader Mark Johnson, of East Grand Forks, said he was shocked and knew very few details.
"The public expects legislators to meet a high standard of conduct," Johnson said in a statement. "As information comes out, we expect the consequences to meet the actions, both in the court of law and in her role at the legislature."
