Early in 2022, as season two of Euphoria was premiering, memes of Sydney Sweeney's horrified on-screen looks were all over social media, with fans claiming the actress needed to appear in a horror film ASAP.
“I already had the script so I was really excited to see everybody’s reactions to Euphoria season two and everybody being like, ‘A horror film! Give us a horror film!'” Sweeney told The Hollywood Reporter at the Immaculate's Los Angeles premiere on Friday.
“I was like, ‘Just you wait! I have something in store for you.’ I held onto it for a long time.”
She tried out for the role ten years ago, so a long time is an understatement, but the film was never produced.
Years later, with her star rising and her sights set on becoming a producer, Sweeney revived the project with writer Andrew Lobel and director Michael Mohan, leading the picture in both capacities.
After the successful romantic comedy Anyone But You, this is the second movie she has produced in the past year.
As for her producing idols, she points to “Margot Robbie with [her] LuckyChap [production company], Brad Pitt with [his] Plan B [company]. I think that they’re really inspirational.”
Sweeney also stated that when choosing producing projects versus strictly acting ones, “It depends on what comes to me and what I find and I want to chase. I want to produce stuff that I’m not in that I can give storytelling to others, and just truly depends on the story.”
Regarding Immaculate, the movie centres on Sweeney's character, an American nun who moves to an Italian convent with sinister and terrifying secrets.
On March 22, Immaculate, which also stars Simona Tabasco from The White Lotus, will be released in theatres.
