Women's Day 2024: Here's everything to know about UN theme for this year
United Nations is focusing on women's representation in digital spaces this year
Women around the world are continuously fighting for their rights, but they still have a long way to go under a global patriarchal system.
The gender disparity in leadership positions is still very much evident and women are still coerced and forced to do unpaid domestic labour for many hours but it is not the case with men, as per a United Nations report, according to Reuters.
The report stated that if this current norm is not reversed, more than 340 million women and girls will have to live in extreme poverty by 2030.
Considering this normalised prejudice against girls and women, the UN has prioritised a particular aspect for the celebration of this International Women's Day.
UN Women and the United Nations are celebrating with the theme “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.”
Their reason for choosing this specific topic is to call attention to the gender gap in the digital space.
UN Women, in addition, presented statistics on their website backing up their theme for this year.
Women make up only 22% of artificial intelligence workers all over the world, as per their data. Their analysis also showed that 44.2% of AI systems studied showed gender bias.
Their theme also focused on online violence against women, stating that 73% of surveyed women journalists have reported suffering online violence on the basis of their profession.
